Ruapehu 1995-96

During the eruption sequence, the Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences (GNS) was responsible for monitoring and providing scientific data to Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management (MCDEM). Information was disseminated down to local authorities at council level. Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the Met-Service were in charge of airspace monitoring through the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC). Several specific government agencies were also involved in advisory panel meetings including Department of Conservation, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture and Army personnel from the local Army base.

Local communities only received a maximum of a few millimeters ash coverage. Even though this was the case, several communities engaged in an active building and road clean up regimes. Rotorua, a nearby town, spent an estimated $53,5111 NZD on cleanup programs across the town.
