HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY INFORMATION STATEMENT 

On Sunday, October 19, 8:26 a.m. HST, a magnitude-4.2 earthquake occurred offshore 11 mi (17 km) northwest of Kalaoa (near the Kona airport) on the Island of Hawaiʻi at a depth of 27 mi (43 km) below sea level. The earthquake had no apparent impact on either Mauna Loa or Kīlauea volcanoes. 

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continues to monitor Hawaiian volcanoes for any changes. 

EARTHQUAKE DESCRIPTION 

  • Magnitude: 4.2 
  • Date and Time: October 19, 2025, at 8:26 a.m. HST 
  • Location: Offshore, 11 mi (17 km) NW of Kalaoa (near the Kona Airport)
  • Depth: 27 mi (43 km) below sea level 
  • Aftershocks are possible in the coming days to weeks

  • Potential Damage: No damage to buildings or infrastructure expected based on earthquake intensity
