CASCADES VOLCANO OBSERVATORY WEEKLY UPDATE
U.S. Geological Survey
Friday, October 9, 2026, 10:09 AM PDT (Friday, October 9, 2026, 17:09 UTC)
CASCADE RANGE (VNUM #)
Current Volcano Alert Level: NORMAL
Current Aviation Color Code: GREEN
Summary: All volcanoes are at normal levels.
Activity Update: All volcanoes in the Cascade Range of Washington and Oregon are at normal background activity levels. These include Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams in Washington State and Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Newberry, and Crater Lake in Oregon.
Past Week Observations: NOTE: An earlier Weekly Update for 10/09 was sent out in error - there have been no new earthquakes at Mount Adams this week. Over the past week, small earthquakes were detected at Mount Hood, Mount Rainier, Mount Adams, and Mount St. Helens. Two new real-time monitoring stations were installed at Mount Adams this week as part of CVO's ongoing effort to improve volcano monitoring at all High- and Very-High Threat volcanoes in Oregon and Washington. In addition, a gas-monitoring flight was performed at Mounts Adams, Hood, and St. Helens, and an airborne thermal survey was performed at Mounts Adams and Hood. All of the surveys are part of CVO's routine monitoring program.
The U.S. Geological Survey Cascades Volcano Observatory and the University of Washington Pacific Northwest Seismic Network continue to monitor Washington and Oregon volcanoes closely and will issue additional notifications as warranted.
