CASCADES VOLCANO OBSERVATORY WEEKLY UPDATE
U.S. Geological Survey
Friday, October 4, 2024, 2:36 PM PDT (Friday, October 4, 2024, 21:36 UTC)
CASCADE RANGE (VNUM #)
Current Volcano Alert Level: NORMAL
Current Aviation Color Code: GREEN
Activity Update: All volcanoes in the Cascade Range of Oregon and Washington are at normal background activity levels. These include Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams in Washington State and Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Newberry, and Crater Lake in Oregon.
Past Week Observations: During September, CVO and our partners at the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN) have noted a minor increase in earthquakes at Mount Adams. Over the past week there were two locatable earthquakes detected near Mount Adams and a field crew installed a new temporary seismic station to gain additional information about the earthquakes that are occurring. More information can be found on the CVO website.
Elsewhere in the Cascade Range, earthquakes were noted this week at Mount Baker, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Crater Lake, all of which were consistent with background activity levels. Field crews took advantage of spectacular weather and completed fieldwork at Mount St. Helens and routine maintenance of monitoring networks at Three Sisters and Newberry.
The U.S. Geological Survey Cascades Volcano Observatory and the University of Washington Pacific Northwest Seismic Network continue to monitor Washington and Oregon volcanoes closely and will issue additional notifications as warranted.
