Naming the Cascade Range Volcanoes
Mount Jefferson, Oregon

Mount Jefferson was named by Lewis and Clark on March 30, 1806, while on their return journey up the Columbia River. They named the peak after President Thomas Jefferson, the president who authorized their expedition. Lewis and Clark's camp that night was just upstream of the location of today's Vancouver, Washington.
"... discovered a high mountain S E. Covered with Snow which we call Mt. Jefferson ..."
[Captain William Clark, March 30, 1806]
