NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS VOLCANO OBSERVATORY DAILY UPDATE
U.S. Geological Survey
Tuesday, January 10, 2023, 11:21 AM ChST (Tuesday, January 10, 2023, 01:21 UTC)

Report prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey.

AHYI SEAMOUNT (VNUM #284141)
20°25'12" N 145°1'48" E, Summit Elevation -449 ft (-137 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY
Current Aviation Color Code: YELLOW

Underwater pressure sensors at Wake Island are currently experiencing a data outage which started at 15:18 UTC on Jan. 7 (1:18 AM ChST Jan. 8). However, signals consistent with possible explosions from Ahyi Seamount had been recorded prior to the data outage, and are likely continuing. A plume of discolored water originating from the summit region of Ahyi Seamount was seen in partly cloudy satellite imagery from January 8.

There are no local monitoring stations near Ahyi Seamount, which limits our ability to detect and characterize volcanic unrest there. We will continue to monitor available remote hydrophonic, seismic, and satellite data closely.
