HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY INFORMATION STATEMENT

On Tuesday, January 3, at 3:31 a.m. HST, a magnitude-4.0 earthquake occurred 4 mi (6 km) northwest of Volcano, Island of Hawaiʻi, at a depth of 12 mi (19 km) below sea level.   

This earthquake occurred in a region of stress interaction between Mauna Loa and Kīlauea volcanoes. The earthquake had no apparent impact on either volcano.  

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continues to monitor Hawaiian volcanoes for any changes.  

EARTHQUAKE DESCRIPTION   

  • Magnitude: 4.0
  • Date and time: Tuesday, January 3, 2023, 3:31 a.m. HST     
  • Location: 4 mi (6 km) NW of Volcano, Island of Hawaiʻi 
  • Depth: 12 mi (19 km) below sea level 
  • Aftershocks are possible in the coming days to weeks
