This aerial view of the summit crater and east flank of Mount Rainier shows remnants of the horseshoe-shaped crater rim that was created by the Osceola landslide about 5,600 years ago. The rim extends to the west and north sides of the summit. The snow and ice covered summit cone actually consists of two overlapping craters, each about 400 m diameter; only the youngest crater is visible. The craters are filled with snow and ice, but the raised rims are snow-free year-round because of high winds and much of the ground is still hot.
