Electrical switching facility, Philippines
Photograph by W.E. Scott on June 23, 1991

Ash-covered electrical-generating facility at former Clark Air Base in the Philippines. Volcanic ash is highly conductive when it becomes wet, which can lead to arcing or bypassing of insulators and shorted electrical circuits. Prompt maintenance of the mechanical and electrical systems, including the removal of ash from electrical equipment, is essential following ashfall. Note the collapsed roof in center of photograph.
