YVO's New Mobile Webcam
YVO has a new mobile webcam that can be moved to various places of interest relevant to geologic hazards at Yellowstone National Park. Our permit allows us to provide a new image to the public every hour. Our initial deployment is at Lake Butte providing a view, through a group of dead standing trees toward Steamboat Point, Mary Bay and the north shore of Yellowstone Lake. This area of Yellowstone Lake is known for its history of hydrothermal activity and steam explosions. The trees in the foreground were killed during the East Fire in 2003. We do not intend for this to be a permanent location for the webcam.
Disclaimer: This view is a single image from a temporary research camera positioned at Lake Butte, Yellowstone. The camera is subject to sporadic breakdown, and may not be repaired immediately. At times, weather will obscure visibility. The internal temperature listed on the image is measured inside the camera box and can be several degrees warmer than the external environment.
About the webcam
The system runs on a solar panel/battery and automatically turns off every evening to preserve power. The equipment was purchased with funds available to the USGS Volcano Hazards Program through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The webcam is sufficiently portable that it can be moved when weather and available personnel allow.
