Earthquake hazards at Newberry volcano
Numerous fault scarps cut the surface of Newberry Volcano. Earthquakes are rare in the region but could
accompany both the gradual spreading of the region east of the Cascades crest (associated with
Basin and Range extension) and eruptive activity
at Newberry Volcano. In the event of an eruption, swarms of small earthquakes will accompany
magma
movement beneath the surface, although such volcanic earthquakes are typically too small to cause
damage away from the volcano. Information and updates about earthquakes at Newberry can be found on
the
earthquake monitoring page.
