Tragedy in 1985

More than 23,000 people were killed in Armero when lahars swept down from the erupting Nevado del Ruiz volcano. When the volcano became restless, there was no international team of volcanologists that could quickly provide a wide range of assistance. Less than a year after this disaster, the USGS and the USAID/OFDA put together the VDAP team of volcano specialists for rapid assistance to developing countries around the world.
