Information about Volcanic Eruption Northeast of Bárðarbunga Volcano in Iceland

The fissure eruption, which began early on 31 August 2014, continues. The eruption is not explosive and has not created an ash plume. For the most accurate and up to date information, visit the Icelandic Meteorological Office Bárðarbunga information webpage.

New Volcano Numbering System Implemented

The Volcano Hazards Program has begun using new numerical identifiers for each volcano in our area of responsibility. These numbers are assigned and maintained by the Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program (GVP). You will see these numbers in current alerts and other information products for specific volcanoes. For example, Kilauea's identifier has changed from 1302-01- to 332010.

For more information, see http://www.avo.alaska.edu/news.php?id=821, http://www.volcano.si.edu/ or contact GVP database manager Ed Venzke (VenzkeE@si.edu).
