USGS Volcano Hazards Program Volcano Update

CVO update page and observatory web site

Activity Update: All volcanoes in the Cascade Range of Oregon and Washington are at normal levels of background seismicity. These include Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams in Washington State; and Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Newberry Volcano, and Crater Lake in Oregon.

Recent Observations: Fine spring weather facilitated maintenance work this week at the Coldwater site at Mount St. Helens, Washington. A cluster of small earthquakes that occurred yesterday near Lakeview, Oregon, is associated with range-front-faulting and is unrelated to volcanic activity. May is Volcano Awareness Month in Washington State. During the month, citizens are encouraged to take the necessary steps to find out about volcanic hazards where they live, work and play, and how to survive and recover from the next volcanic eruption. Visit the Washington State Emergency Management Division for information on how to prepare (http://www.emd.wa.gov/preparedness/prep_infocus.shtml).

The U.S. Geological Survey Cascades Volcano Observatory and the University of Washington continue to monitor the Washington and Oregon volcanoes closely and will issue additional updates and changes in alert level as warranted.
