USGS Volcano Hazards Program Volcano Update

CVO update page and observatory web site

Activity Update: All volcanoes in the Cascade Range of Oregon and Washington are at normal levels of background seismicity. These include Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams in Washington State; and Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Newberry Volcano, and Crater Lake in Oregon.

Recent Observations: Volcano monitoring shows that all volcanoes have remained at background levels this week, which included a number of small earthquakes located by the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN, http://www.pnsn.org) at Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood and Newberry Volcano. Between 04/14 04/18, five earthquakes were located within or along the margins of the Newberry caldera. Several other earthquakes occurred in this area but were too small to located. For more information about these events, see the article "Earthquakes at Newberry, April 14-18" at http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/observatories/cvo/cvo_news_archive.html

The U.S. Geological Survey Cascades Volcano Observatory and the University of Washington continue to monitor the Washington and Oregon volcanoes closely and will issue additional updates and changes in alert level as warranted.
