Possessions are salvaged from a house along the Toutle River downstream from Mount St. Helens. The home was buried in volcanic debris by the largest lahar of the eruption on 18 May 1980. Since the Toutle River lahar originated from the huge landslide that triggered the eruption at 8:32 a.m., the lahar didn't reach its peak until about 16 hours later! Homes and communities downstream from other volcanoes may be at a similar risk from the effects of lahars. |
