| Intense scour around bridge piers and impacts from boulders and other debris from a lahar in the Abacan River, Philippines, caused the structural failure of this and nearly all other bridges crossing the river in Angeles City. The lahar was triggered by intense rainfall and the erosion of hot volcanic deposits erupted by Mount Pinatubo on June 15, 1991. Also, several tens of meters of bank erosion occurred just downstream of the bridge, causing many buildings along the bank to collapse when their foundations were undercut by the river. |
