Photograph by Elliot Endo, 1995

GPS receiver atop a benchmark on Augustine Volcano, 275 km southwest of Anchorage, Alaska, during a 1995 survey aimed at detecting deformation of the volcano. In addition to such intermittent GPS surveys, we monitor deformation of Augustine using three permanent GPS receivers and several tiltmeters (see map for station locations and graphic plots of data from GPS receivers and tiltmeters). The most recent eruption of Augustine occurred in 1986, which produced large eruption clouds and pyroclastic flows, and added a new lava flow to the summit lava-dome complex.
