Aerial view of fissures in Napau Crater, Kilauea Volcano, Hawai`i
Photograph by C. Heliker on 31 January 1997

Gas escapes from fissures that erupted in Napau Crater on the east rift zone of Kilauea Volcano during eruptive episode 54. The crater is about 5 km uprift (SW) from Pu`u `O`o. The dark patches on either side of the fissures are lava flows that were emplaced during the activity. This part of the east rift zone widened about 1 m as magma forced its way to the surface to feed the eruption.
