Lava fountains erupt from one of six short fissures that opened along the east rift zone of Kilauea during eruptive episode 54. The first fissure began erupting at 2:40 A.M. on January 30 and the last fissure stopped erupting at 12:33 A.M. on January 31. Each fissure was active between about 2 and 6 hours, producing lava fountains 3 to 30 m tall.
