Lava fountains erupt from one of six short fissures that
opened along the east rift zone of Kilauea during eruptive episode
54. The first fissure began erupting at 2:40 A.M. on January 30 and
the last fissure stopped erupting at 12:33 A.M. on January
31. Each fissure was active between about 2 and 6 hours,
producing lava fountains 3 to 30 m tall.
