Members of the Pierce County, Washington, Explorer Search & Rescue Unit clear a small area for one of 10 acoustic-flow monitors that can detect ground vibration caused by a passing lahar. The volunteers spent a weekend in July 1998 preparing sites for the monitors and learning about potential lahar hazards at Mount Rainier.
